St. Gertrude Bulldog Football
Game Results
For the 4th year in a row, the Saint Gertrude Bulldogs sent a team to the playoffs.  The 5-3-1 5th&6th grade team played the division leading GA Angels at GA.  The game could not have been closer.  An early mistake by the Bulldogs led to the game's only score.  Final: 6-0 GA.  We are all extremely proud of our boys who started the season 0-2-1, and never gave up, winning four out of their next five.  Great job!

We also bid goodbye to 16 8th graders who played their last game for the Bulldogs:

Andy Cassady            Pat Conners
Pat Costello               Tom DeTemple
John Giuffre              Nick Hoctor
Joe Huhn                  Stephen Kaes
Drew Konieczka         B. J. Kreutz
Greg Markgraf          Brad Meyer
Ryan Murray             Alex Paolo
Jay Scavo                  Pat Watkins

... and finally, we say goodbye to two men who have helped shape the football skills and character of our boys for many years, coaches Ryan Conners and Louie DeTemple.  These two will definitely be missed.

October 20, 2002 -
The Bulldog reserves finished the season  with a 12-6 victory over Holy Trinity/St. Cecilia Bearcats.  The varsity continued to improve, but were unable to match the size and speed of  the Holy Trinity/St. Cecilia Varsity.

The reserve team dominated play from the opening drive.  They opened the scoring with a 20 yard sweep by Nick Wallace.  The second Bulldog score was the result of a busted play.  QB Nick Schlie went back to pass, and was hit by two Bearcats.  Before they could bring him down, he pitched the ball to Wallace, who ran 47 yards for the score.

The game was nearly a shutout, with the Bearcats finally scoring with 7 seconds left in the game.  Final score, Bulldogs 12 - Bearcats 6.

Though the varsity did not win a game this season, they showed their true character today.  After losing starting tailback Joe Huhn and falling behind by two scores, they were on defense facing the much bigger Bearcats team.  The Bearcats  called a quarterback keeper, and their 5'8 - 154 lb QB took off down the field.  7th grade cornerback Matt Melink, all 4'8" and 80 pounds of him, grabbed the Bearcat (twice his size) and hung on for nearly 20 yards, before finally bringing him down.

This play sparked the Bulldog offense, who, starting on their own 14 yard line, marched down the field mostly on the back of 8th grade tailback John Giuffre and 7th grade tailback Joe Fiore.  Finally, Giuffre punched the ball in for a Bulldog score.  While the final score was 22-6 Bearcats, the Bulldogs proved that they are a group of young men with character who never quit.

As for the reserves, they are IN THE PLAYOFFS!  Games and times to be announced.

October 13, 2002 - The Bulldog reserves returned to the winner's circle with a 12-8 victory over All Saints.  The varsity continued to improve, but were unable to match the size and speed of the 8th grade All Saints Team.

The initial see-saw battle abruptly turned St. Gertrude's way when Tony Giuffre batted an All Saints pass in the air to be then intercepted by 5th grader Bubba Hoctor.  The Bulldogs used the momentum to march down the field, with key runs by Nick Wallacw, Andrew O'Connor and a pass to Ryan MacEachen.  Following a 15 yard run by Wallace, O'Connor took the ball up the gut for the Bulldog's first score.  The half ended 6-0 Bulldogs.

In the 3rd quarter, the Shamrocks answered with a touchdown pass and 2 pt conversion for an 8-6 lead, but the Bulldogs answered again with a 20 yard scamper by Wallace and a 12 yard passing TD from QB Nick Schlie to Cole Hayes, giving the Bulldogs a 12-8 lead.

In the 4th, All Saints moved the ball well, but their last gasp attempt to pull ahead was stymied by 3rd and 4th down QB sacks by the Bulldogs.

The varsity faced the powerful All Saints 8th grade team.  The Bulldogs never quit, but were overmatched in size and speed.  All Saints won the game 18-0.

The 4-3-1 Bulldog Reserve team faces Holy Trinity/St. Cecilia next week for a game with PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS.  The varsity will celebrate the final game for their 16 8th graders.   Games are at 1:15 and 2:45 at Madeira High School.
